19 Tabs and a Mystery Song

May 8, 2025 | Blog

I saw a quote the other day that made me laugh out loud… then immediately feel very seen:
“My mind is like my internet browser—19 tabs open, 3 are frozen, and I have no idea where the music is coming from.”

Whoever said that?
Are you spying on me?

Because my brain has felt that way more times than I can count.

My son is a computer wiz. (Which is helpful, since I once called him because my keyboard “stopped working”—turns out I had accidentally turned it off.) Every time he opens my laptop, he sighs and says:
“MOM! You have so many tabs open, no wonder nothing’s loading!”
And he’s right.
There are tabs from last week, last month… maybe even last Christmas. Articles I meant to read, emails half-written, a recipe I saved in a moment of ambition, and tabs open just so I don’t forget something important. It’s organized chaos—at best.
But let’s be honest—it’s not just my laptop. It’s my brain.

You know the feeling: You sit down to do one task—just one.
But suddenly you’re checking your calendar, ordering dog food, texting someone back, wondering if you ever paid that bill, Googling “why is my left eyelid twitching,” and somehow watching a video of a goat on a trampoline.
And of course—there’s music playing from somewhere… but you have no clue where it’s coming from. Now it’s just the theme song to your overwhelm.

It’s the mental multitasking Olympics—and I’m unintentionally training for gold.

The truth is, life is full.
The to-do list is long.
And the tabs in our minds rarely close—they just stack up and slow us down.

Sometimes, we don’t even realize how overloaded we are until something freezes.
A missed appointment.
A flash of irritation.
Tears while folding towels.
Or forgetting why you walked into the kitchen (again).

That’s usually my cue to pause. To breathe.
To start closing a few tabs that really don’t need my attention right now.
And maybe—just maybe—let God hit refresh.

Because I’m learning that I don’t have to keep every tab open to be faithful or productive.
Sometimes, the most spiritual thing I can do is rest.
Or laugh with my son.
Or step away from the noise and let my heart catch up with my mind.

So if your brain feels cluttered today—like too many tabs are open and you’re not sure where the music is coming from—you’re not alone.
You’re human. Beautifully, wonderfully, browser-overloaded human.

And you know what? It’s okay to close the laptop, turn off the notifications, and just be.

The tabs will wait.
But your peace? That’s worth shutting it all down for.
