The Driveway Dance

On one of my early morning walks, I was surprised to see a man dressed in a tailored suit dancing and singing in his driveway. He was watching himself in the car window, which was also a little odd. Maybe he had just received good news or was happy to be heading to work. It seemed strange, but I thought little of it until I saw him the next day doing the same song and dance. And he was there again the day after that. Why was this man putting on a show in his driveway every morning? When I realized he was always looking into the window of a car in the driveway, I realized what was happening. He wasn’t watching himself in the car window; he was looking at his little girl. This performance was for her! Every morning, while she waited in the car before school, he took a moment to give her a driveway performance, even if that performance was in a matching pink tutu!

I turned down the music in my earbuds to listen and heard giggles of delight.

“I love you, Daddy! More! More!”

Then, she would sing her own song, and he would dance to it before they began their trip to school. After a while, this show was something I looked forward to on my morning walks. There was such love and joy in that man’s dance, and I could hear the little girl’s squeals of delight from inside the car. What a precious sight between a father and his little daughter.

A few weeks later, on a particularly difficult day, I reflected on the driveway dance as I took my daily walk. The scripture, Zephaniah 3:17, kept repeating in my head: “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, He will calm your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” I thought about how the little girl’s father had delighted so much in his daughter that he would sing and dance over her every morning. Suddenly, I could envision my Heavenly Father doing the same for me. God sings over me? He delights in me? Indeed, He does! And He does this with deep love and boundless joy. On my hard days, His delight in me is a saving grace.

I stopped my walk on that hard day, sat on the curb, and took a deep breath. I wanted to soak in the truth that I am not alone in my struggle to figure things out. In fact, it’s not my job to put all the pieces in place and make sense of it all. That is God’s job, and He has already taken care of it. He is not worrying about me, but is delighting over me. All I need to do is soak in and receive that delight and song, rest in His love, and remember whose I am.

On the days I miss my earthly father (that’s every day), I remember that just as he sang over me and rejoiced, my Heavenly Father is doing the same. God wants us to focus on the delight He has for us and not feel so burdened to accomplish more, be more, do more. We can simply behold his beauty and rest in knowing we are loved, chosen, cherished, forgiven, free, and redeemed.

Right now, He is singing over you, and that song has no end. It goes on forever. Soak in that love and hope today. You are worthy of all the driveway dances!
