I read a quote recently and literally shouted, “YES!” out loud when I saw it.
“When you withhold your applause, you don’t slow down someone else’s momentum. You simply slow down your own.”
I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
Can you think of a time when someone cheered you on? Maybe it was in your business, your ministry, your family, or during a season when life just felt hard. Someone noticed your effort. Someone celebrated your success. Someone believed in you.
Wasn’t it a wonderful feeling?
Didn’t it make you want to keep going?
Encouragement has a way of doing that. It reminds us that what we’re doing matters. It gives us the courage to take the next step.
As I thought about that quote, I found myself thinking about something my mom used to say. She believed in celebrating people well.
She would remind me, “When you celebrate others, your heart stays open to gratitude, joy, and the blessings still ahead. Their win does not diminish yours.”
What a beautiful truth.
So many people get caught in the trap of comparison. We compare our behind-the-scenes struggles to someone else’s highlight reel and wonder why we’re not where we hoped we’d be by now. We find ourselves measuring, competing, and keeping score.
But comparison steals joy.
Growth happens when we choose celebration instead.
I’ve thought about this a lot and about how proud I am of so many of my friends. Some are building businesses and nonprofits. Some are overcoming challenges they never expected to face. Some are stepping into new opportunities and navigating seasons of tremendous change. Some are simply showing up every day and doing the hard work of life.
The truth is, someone else’s success doesn’t take anything away. In fact, it completes rather than competes. When we celebrate others,
we create more room for joy, gratitude, and community.
What a wonderful place this world would be if we became people who cheer loudly. People who celebrate wins that aren’t our own. People who encourage more than they compare.

Write the note.
Celebrate the promotion.
Cheer for the accomplishment.
The world needs more encouragers and fewer scorekeepers.
You never know what battle someone fought to get to this moment, or how much your encouragement might help them believe they can take the next step.
