Holiday Smells and Heavenly Promises

It’s October, and in this new season, I can almost smell the peanut brittle, divinity, and boiled custard. If you know about boiled custard, then you know those scents take me straight back to holiday baking with Grandma Mabel. She always started early, and usually with me by her side. I’m sure she prayed for extra patience when I showed up in my little apron and eager smile—I always loved the eating more than the baking!

When I received Grandma’s Bible, I found a photo of her and my mom tucked inside. It still rests on the scripture she highlighted in Ephesians: “God has great things ahead, far greater than we can dream or imagine.” (Ephesians 3:20). That verse carried her, and now it carries me. She lived her life with her eyes on what was eternal, never letting the noise of the world sway her, and loving her family in a way that made each of us feel special.

Seasons represent change, and that’s not always comfortable. The leaves are turning, and life shifts too—jobs change, people move, families grow and stretch. But God has every season in His hands. Don’t be afraid of the change, and don’t try to take the season back. Trust Him—He already knows what’s ahead, and He will walk with you through it.

After Grandma went to heaven, Mom often wished for just one more conversation with her. I think we all long for that kind of wisdom at times. I’m grateful I had strong examples of women who tuned out the noise, stood firm on Scripture, and reminded me that the best is yet to come.

So when I think of those holiday kitchen smells, I smile, knowing Mom and Grandma are together again—probably baking, probably laughing, and certainly reminding us: Embrace the season. Welcome the change. Trust God’s plan. He has prepared something greater than you can even imagine.
