He didn’t ask for much… just a sandwich.
Not because he was hungry in the way most of us understand, but because he knew the clock was ticking. After chemo, there is often a small window… a brief moment when food actually sounds good. And if you miss it, it is gone.
He had driven many miles for his treatment, spending half his day on the road. When we handed him the gas card, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “Now I don’t have to use my money for gas… I can finally get that sub sandwich after treatment.”
To him, that sandwich was gold.
I remember that feeling so vividly with my mom. After chemo, when her appetite would briefly return, she loved going to Charlie’s Chicken. She knew that in just a few hours, that window would close. Some of our most precious moments were at those meals after chemo, when that food tasted so good. So she leaned into it. She enjoyed it. She made the most of that moment.
And this… this is why The Lisa Bain Ministries Miles of Hope project exists.
Because every cancer journey comes with challenges, but for so many rural Oklahoma families, distance should not be one of them.
Many patients travel hours, multiple times each week, just to receive chemotherapy and radiation in Tulsa. And for many, the high cost of fuel becomes an overwhelming burden on top of everything else.
Through our Miles of Hope Program, we provide gas cards so no one has to choose between long trips to treatment and putting food on the table, filling a prescription, or caring for their family.
Because of our incredible sponsors, donors, and grant partners, we are able to meet these needs and walk alongside patients in the moments that matter most.
And sometimes… it looks like a man sitting quietly, finally able to enjoy a sandwich after chemo.
Sometimes the smallest things… are actually the biggest things.
With fuel prices rising, the need is greater than ever. And you can be the reason someone makes it to treatment… and still has something
left for a simple meal, a prescription, or their family.
