Moose and the Easter Surprise

There are just some stories that feel like a little wink from heaven, and this one is all Moose.

If you know Moose, you already know he has a history of choosing the most unexpected friends. We still laugh about his “pet turtle,” the one we set free, only for that turtle to come right back up to the gate to visit him like they had a standing playdate. Moose would just sit there waiting, like the most patient little soul you’ve ever seen.

So honestly, I should have known.

Leave it to Easter weekend, and not even Easter Sunday, but that quiet Saturday in between, for Moose to find another tiny friend. Or should I say, friends!

Last night, in the middle of a thunderstorm, I let him out, and he took off to the side of the yard like he had a mission. Barking, which Moose never does, and going back to the same spot over and over. I kept thinking, what in the world is over there? So I grabbed a flashlight and walked over.

I moved a little grass, and there it was.

A tiny bunny nest, soaking wet.

The tiniest, most fragile little babies, tucked down in the ground.

And Moose was just sitting there, drenched from the rain, with a big goofy grin on his face. It took me back to the days when Mavis Pearl stood guard over her little bunny nest. Not bothering them. Not trying to get to them. Just watching, like they were family.

I stood there smiling because it is so him. Of course he does not see bunnies. He sees friends.

So now we have a bunny nest in the yard, a very watchful Bernese Mountain Dog, and I guess we are all officially part of Moose’s protection plan. The mowers have been warned. There may or may not be a sign involved.

It just made me smile that this happened today. This quiet, in-between Saturday before Easter.

And there it was, something small and sweet, tucked away, that you could easily miss if you were not paying attention.

Just a little reminder that even on the quiet days, there is still something really good happening.

Sometimes you just have to look a little closer. Sunday is coming, and it looks like Moose has some new friends to celebrate with.
