When I went to see our sweet Quilting Angels the other day, I honestly thought I’d just run in, grab the quilts and care items, hug necks, and head back out.
But the second I walked in, I knew…
I needed to sit down and breathe for a minute.
They were all gathered around the table for lunch—homemade soup. And before I could even say a word, I heard, “Lisa, come join us!” They were already pulling out a chair for me. That’s just who they are. And let me tell you… the minute that soup smell hit me, I stopped in my tracks.
It was the smell.
Warm. Familiar. Kind.
Like it reached right into my soul.
Suddenly, I wasn’t in that quilting room anymore.
I was a little girl walking through the door on a cold day, cheeks red, hair a mess, dropping my coat on the floor. Mom had soup simmering
on the stove, and that smell meant, “You’re home. You’re safe. Everything’s okay.”
It’s funny how fast memories can find you.
Sitting there with those precious quilters, that same feeling washed right over me. I didn’t expect it, but goodness, it felt like medicine. It reminded me that some of the most powerful things in our lives are also the simplest.
A bowl of soup.
A warm room.
Women who love big.
A smell that brings you right back to the place your heart remembers.
Life hits hard sometimes.
Some days are heavy.
But God loves to use the little things—tiny, ordinary, everyday things—to steady us again.
That day, He used soup.
A smell that took me home.
A memory that wrapped around me like a quilt.
A nudge to notice the good things, the small things, the things we usually walk right past.
So this week, here’s what I’m holding onto:
Stop. Slow down. Smell the soup.
Let the little things lift your heart.
Let God meet you right where you are—yes, even in the middle of an ordinary day.
Because sometimes healing looks like a warm bowl of soup shared with people who love big.
And sometimes the smallest moments end up being the biggest grace.
And if you didn’t grow up with those cozy memories, it is my prayer that God will bring that warmth to you in brand-new ways. Everyone deserves a “soup on a cold day” moment. My prayer is that you find yours today.
