Sustaining Joy in the Heavy Places

Some of the most sacred moments in this ministry happen in quiet rooms, holding hands, whispering prayers, and sitting with families when life feels fragile. These moments may never be seen on social media or highlighted at an event, but they are holy ground—where love shows up in the middle of heartbreak.

The truth is, walking with families through hospice, illness, or loss can be both beautiful and heavy. There are days when the weight of it all makes me want to curl up in my prayer closet and let the tears fall. But even there—in the tears, in the weariness—I find that God meets me.

And what I’ve discovered is this: sustaining joy isn’t about escaping the pain. It’s about finding Him in it.

Joy shows up in unexpected places—in the laughter that breaks through tears, in a child’s smile when snuggling up to one of our therapy dogs, in the quiet peace that fills a hospice room when prayers are whispered. It’s in the everyday mercies of God that remind us we’re not walking alone.

When I feel like I can’t take another step, He gently reminds me that His strength is made perfect in weakness. I don’t have to carry every burden, just show up with love. He will do the rest.

That’s where sustaining joy is found: not in denying the heartbreak, but in leaning into the One who redeems it. In choosing to notice the small gifts, the sacred interruptions, the glimmers of light in the darkest rooms.

Friend, if you’re walking through a season where grief is real and hope feels far away, take heart. You don’t have to muster up joy on your own—it’s a gift of His Spirit, given right where you are. And in those unseen, tender places, healing begins. Not because the pain disappears, but because God shows up and carries us through.

And that is where joy—true, sustaining joy—is born.
