The Best Stories Aren’t Always In Focus

This weekend, we tackled the ever-adventurous task of cleaning out storage—which, let’s be honest, is a whole journey in itself. We opened boxes we hadn’t touched in years—filled with keepsakes, dusty décor, and more than a few things we probably should’ve parted with long ago.

But tucked between it all was a stack of old photos… and time stood still.

As I flipped through those memories—birthdays, holidays, school mornings, vacations—something struck me. The pictures I kept lingering on weren’t the perfectly posed ones. Not the ones where everyone was smiling just right or the lighting was flawless.

Nope.

My favorites? The ones that went completely sideways.

The surprise birthday party where they really got me.
The “first day of school” shot where nothing went as planned.
The holiday FaceTime photo full of blurry screens and funny faces.
The photo with a fly smack-dab on the nose—and somehow, it was beautiful.
A moment with a friend laughing about the time Mavis ate pink glitter—and history was made. We hyperventilated from laughing.
A not-so-fun chemo day when Mom decided to turn it around with a face so ridiculous, we laughed until we couldn’t breathe.

Every single photo told a story. A real one. The kind that makes you laugh out loud or tear up just a little—because you remember how much life was in that moment, even if the image wasn’t perfect.

It reminded me that the most beautiful memories aren’t curated. They’re lived.

They’re messy.
They’re noisy.
They’re unexpected, unfiltered, and sometimes hilariously imperfect.

And honestly? That’s the good stuff.

Because those are the moments where joy sneaks in unannounced. Where love shows up in the middle of the chaos. Where we realize that, in all its imperfections, life is still so good.

So today, I’m celebrating the outtakes—the blurry, crooked, unplanned photos and the stories they carry. In a world that encourages us to edit, filter, and present the polished version, I want to remember the real stuff. The slightly wild, wonderfully honest, deeply human stuff.

Those are the memories I’ll hold onto the longest.
