The Gift of Listening

What an honor it is to sit and listen to someone’s story. I’ve always loved stories—but lately, they’ve been hitting a little deeper.

In recent visits this month, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with senior heroes—some well into their 90s—who’ve lived lives filled with rich heritage, quiet courage, and resilience that can’t be measured. As they shared the details of their journeys—the trials and triumphs, heartbreaks and healing—I found myself wiping away tears more than once. Our whole team did.

Even as time has faded some memories, there’s a light that still shines when they speak. A soft sparkle in their eyes as they recount a love story that still lives in their heart. A gentle smile when we begin to sing together, their faces transforming with joy and recognition. Music has a way of unlocking what words sometimes can’t.

And then there’s Mabel, Maddie, and Moose—angels with paws who break down walls with nothing more than a snuggle or a wag of the tail. I’ve watched as hardened expressions melted, loneliness eased, and stories began to pour out—all because of a furry hug or snuggle. There’s something about that kind of unconditional love that opens the door for connection in ways words never could.

One moment I’ll never forget came at the end of a visit with a sweet elderly veteran. After sharing his story with me—one that stirred something deep inside—he looked at me, his eyes full of tears, and said, “Thank you for listening… you really heard what I said, and it mattered to you. That was my gift today. Thank you.”

I carried those words with me all the way home.

I miss my mom and dad so much. These visits take me back to those tender moments with them—their voices, their wisdom, their stories. What a gift their lives were. What a gift these lives are.

People matter. Their stories matter. Their presence matters. And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can offer someone is simply to show up—with your ears, your heart, and maybe even a furry companion by your side.

Take a moment today to sit, listen, and really hear someone. You might just find that while you’re giving them a gift, you’ll receive one too.
