When the Holidays Hold More Than Sparkle

Dec 6, 2025 | Blog

Today was one of those days when everything around me looked festive and bright, yet every care delivery and conversation seemed to tug my heart toward the truth that so many are hurting right now.

A mom shared about her child gone too soon, a grief that changes the color of every holiday. Another is walking her own mother through the later stages of cancer, holy, tender, exhausting ground. And a sweet family is praying with everything in them for a baby, aching to hold a child while the season keeps whispering “miracles” all around them.

It was as if each visit and conversation gently reminded me once again that the holidays do not show up the same for everyone.Yes, this is the season of twinkling lights, cheerful music, and everything merry. But it is also the time when empty chairs feel even emptier, when longing feels a little sharper, when memories rise to the surface like gifts we never knew were waiting for us.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, perspective shifts. Our hearts soften. We notice things we might have rushed past.We lean in a little closer. We love a little deeper.

Because the truth is, we never really know what someone is carrying, especially this time of year.

Behind every smile might be a story of waiting. Behind every “I am okay” might be a heart that is breaking. Behind every quiet moment might be a prayer too tender to speak aloud.

But here is the good news that keeps me steady.

Jesus steps right into all of it. Into the heartbreak. Into the longing. Into the uncertainty and the waiting.

He is Emmanuel, God with us. With us in the celebration. With us in the sorrow. With us in the middle of stories that do not look anything like we hoped they would.

So if this season feels heavy for you, or for someone you love, please hear this. You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten.

Let us be gentle with one another as we walk through these December days. Let us look people in the eyes a little longer.
Let us offer the small kindnesses, the listening ear, the warm hug, the whispered prayer, because those small things become really big things when a heart is fragile.

Yes, the holidays can hold more than sparkle, but they also hold room for deep healing, unexpected hope, and moments that brighten a weary soul.

And maybe, just maybe, that is the miracle someone needs most this Christmas.
