Grandma Mabel

It’s October, and in this new season, I can smell the peanut brittle, divinity, and boiled custard. If you are familiar with boiled custard, then you know I’m remembering holiday baking. These are memories that are wrapped around Grandma Mabel. (Mabel Joy was named after my precious Grandma) Grandma would always begin preparing holiday goodies early, and often with me by her side. Grandma taught me to bake, and I’m sure she had to pray for extra patience when I showed up in her kitchen like a little tornado with an eager smile. I always liked the eating more than the baking!

I found Grandma’s Bible today while cleaning the attic, and when I opened it to her favorite passage, a photo of her fell out. It is one of my favorites! All the memories flooded back to me- how she loved the Lord with all her heart and loved her family in a way that made each one of us feel special. She knew what mattered in life, and she kept her priorities focused on what was eternal, not allowing the noise of life to sway her. The verse she loved gives me strength in this new season: “God has great things ahead, far greater than we can dream or imagine.” Ephesians 3:20. It was highlighted and circled in her bible.

Seasons represent change, and that’s not always comfortable. But it is necessary. The leaves are changing, and there are circumstances in our lives that will also change. People will leave, jobs will transition, some of us will be uprooted and replanted somewhere else. God has this season in His hands. Fear not, and don’t take the season back. Allow the change to come and set your eyes on the Savior. He knows every change that is on the horizon, and He will walk with you through those changes.

After Grandma went to heaven, Mom used to long for just one more conversation with her. We all need that kind of wisdom that reminds us the best is yet to come. I give thanks every day that I had solid examples of women who focused on the mission, never compromised, and replaced the noise with the words of Jesus and the promises of scripture.

I smile when I remember those delicious kitchen smells, knowing that Mom and Grandma are together again. Even though I miss them, it makes me happy to know these wise women are once again having conversations. If they were here, they would tell you to embrace the new season, welcome change, and trust that God has prepared something better than we can ever imagine.
