End of Year Awe

One of the best things Skipper and I promised we would do this year (at the end of every day) is ask ourselves (no matter how good or bad the day was) “What lessons did we learn from this day; what were the teachable moments?” I have to admit some of the days I was like “are there really teachable moments in this one? I mean come on now!” There were. Turns out that was one of the best gifts we gave ourselves in 2020 because there were more lessons than we could count and more growth than we could measure. We even found that some of the things that broke our hearts in 2020, changed our vision and gave us more clarity. And that was our word for 2020: Clarity.

Clarity changed our perspective, and helped drown out the noise…..to focus on the mission at hand. This has been a year of many things that put us in “awe”. Some good “awe” some not so good “awe”. In fact the word “awe” means “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.” Just days ago we were in our yard looking up at the sky in complete awe of Jupiter and Saturn connecting in the Christmas skies! A once in nearly thousand year moment that moved us with awe! I love how my favorite author Ann Voskamp put this moment into words. “Maybe this is the very year of the last 800 years that most needs us to look up to the starry heavens to a blazing Christmas star drawing us all to focus less on self, and focus on how to be a light for others. Because whenever we feel small with awe, we love each other large. When we live full of awe, we are moved to change what is awful in the world.” I could not have said it better. My word this year may be “awe.” I want to be in constant awe of all that God is doing, and be aware of it! I don’t want to miss it because I am focused on trivial things. 2020 changed my perspective. New seasons bring new “awe!” I want to love in “awe”, give to others in “awe” and even if it is a very small part, help change what may be awful in the world. If we look for “awe”some things, even on hard days, we will find them!

As Mother Teresa so wonderful put it “Do small things with great love.” May 2021 be filled with loving “awe” towards others, and a new season filled with “awesome” miracles and moments! Happy “Awe”some 2021 everyone! Here we go! “The greater our sense of awe, the greater our sense of connection”. Ann Voskamp
