My 2 year old grandson Sam is a huge cake fan. He loves the part where we blow out the candles and then eat the cake.
“Grandma, let’s go eat cake and blow out the candles!” He doesn’t always get the order of things right, but I love his excitement. We recently celebrated my husband’s birthday and made sure Sam was a big part of the cake and candles. I loved seeing his awe and excitement as he blew hard at the candles to make sure every one was out before I cut the cake and the eating began. When the cake was in front of him, Sam was on a mission and not to be disturbed. It wouldn’t be a party without Sam’s cake excitement.
“Grandma, that was good cake! Can we do it again?”
There isn’t anything that melts my heart like Sam’s innocence and sweetness. He doesn’t realize it, but he teaches me little lessons every time we are together. One night, I tucked Sam in bed and read him a story. When I finished, he gave me a big hug and said, “Grandma, you are such a lovely person. I sure love you.”I prayed over Sam, and as I turned off the light, I heard his voice again: “Grandma, I love you!” My heart was melting on the floor at that moment and also bursting with love for this little fella.
This morning, I was reflecting on Sam’s precious faith, innocence, and the way he shares his thoughts straight from the heart. I thought about his excitement about cake and his complete awe over it. I don’t think it was a coincidence that my verse for the day was Matthew 18:3-4, which says, “Unless you change and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. So whoever will humble himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
The innocence of children was a model Christ gave us for our faith. He says that we are to become more like a child when it comes to trusting Him, and Sam is my role model for this. He doesn’t live with constant worry about what people think. He loves deep and isn’t afraid to express awe over the simple things. Sam dreams big and lives every day to the fullest. And he appreciates every cake moment he can get.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if I woke up every day and approached my Heavenly Father with the excitement and joy of Sam’s cake moments? I need to savor those awesome moments in life and treasure them all, like Sam does. I need to tell those lovely people in my life that they are lovely people, because sometimes it’s important that they hear the words.
Today, I will look for “cake moments” in my day. I will treasure the little awesome moments God has given me and walk in the gratefulness of another day. There is power and joy in being more like a child. I will choose to have the innocence of a child and walk in that delightful joy. And there is nothing like a slice of cake to start it off! I think I’ll ask Sam to join me. He’s a great little teacher.
Here’s to a day of cake moments!
