Finding the “why” in the “wait”

There I was in yet another waiting room. Waiting with a friend on one of her visits to see her doctor. In fact it was my third waiting room that day, where I had been at my own appointments. I felt like my day was filled nothing but waiting…..and waiting. I was restless and very impatient for the waiting to be over.
In the quiet of one of those waiting rooms, I thought about all that waiting. (And my impatience with it all). I thought about the hours and hours we spend on waiting each week. Sometimes it is filled with little waits like waiting on a traffic light, for that coffee pot to fill, waiting in a line at the airport, the minutes pass, and we wait. Sometimes the waiting is unbearable and bewildering like when waiting and pleading with God to please “hurry up!” on a long prayed prayer.

I’m guessing you are waiting on something too: for that good report on a health diagnosis to come, for you to hear about that new job you applied for, for an apology to come, possibly for a financial miracle, or a relationship to be restored.
If you’re like me, you want to push through the hard times, but instead, you find yourself paralyzed in a waiting room miles from where you want to be.

Waiting can feel like a weakness, especially in a culture that places a high value on making things happen. But waiting is not a weakness. It’s actually empowering. Yes, empowering! There is something miraculous happening while we wait.
This verse is on my vision board and helps me realize those moments of wait truly are worth it. “Wait on the LORD … He shall strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14).
God is strengthening our hearts while we wait!
When I read that verse every day, it gives me the courage to wait on God.

Now after walking through one of the most “waiting seasons” of my life I begin to understand the “why” of the wait. I simply could not have stepped into the next season without what I learned in that wait. Sometimes it is in the waiting that the “beauty – from – ashes happens in our lives. The story could not have been written anywhere else but the waiting room.

I look back and see how God strengthened my broken heart during the minutes that passed. It was not an in between place. Real work was being done and God revealed clarity and truth, brought healing to my soul, and set the stage for what I had been praying for all along. He was getting ME ready! It just came in a different way than I ever imagined. God is good at that.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for, but I’m guessing you’re waiting for something. It is my prayer that you are encouraged in knowing that your wait is not a waste of time. It is an investment of time. God is preparing and strengthening your heart.
May you always find that God is always, always, worth the wait.

Psalm 27:14
“Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!” Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)
