Every holiday season, we climb into our attic, which we call “the black hole,” and do a thorough cleaning. It’s a scary place—we could get trapped in the mess and no one would hear us scream. I tell Skipper if I go into the attic and he doesn’t hear from me in three hours, begin the search.
How do we manage to accumulate all that stuff? I’m convinced the junk breeds more junk while we are sleeping. On a recent cleaning spree, I came across a dusty box with my name on it, and inside was some of my artwork from elementary school. I pulled out this piece, and after all these years, I could still envision my art teacher, Mrs. Hutchinson, helping me with it. “Oh, Lisa,” she said. “This is a lovely chicken.” God love her. I think this was my attempt at embroidery. Or was it? I’m not so sure. Next to the box of artwork was a box labeled “Lisa’s Chicken Suit.” I had to laugh. There seems to be a life theme here.
God has a sense of humor, and this was a fun reminder that even way back in elementary school, God knew the twists and turns my life would take. And He knew that somewhere along the way, there would be a chicken suit. This is a great reminder for a new season: God knows what is far into our future and what is right around the corner. He is waiting for you in your next season, and He will give you the grace and strength and everything else you need to walk through it. Those seasons might be filled with storms and dark days, but sometimes they are filled with surprises and laughter (and maybe a few chickens, if you’re lucky!)
As we turn the corner into fall, this is your reminder that God will take you through this new season, no matter what it holds. Who knows, maybe He will give you a few chickens to bring some laughter your way. Happy fall, ya’ll!
