“I feel so ordinary, so small and insignificant”. Have you ever let that negative tape swirl inside your thinking before? Feeling like what you do simply doesn’t matter? One precious lady shared with me recently about how everyone else was doing grand things, but she was at home and could not do all those wonderful things she saw others doing on social media. This lady was the caretaker for her father. She was unable to see her incredible worth and value through the noise. She felt “just ordinary.” But what she was doing was extraordinary!
I began to think about our conversation. What seems ordinary to us is actually extraordinary to God. In fact ordinary can be so very holy. With God by our side in the midst of what we feel is ordinary – extraordinary impact is always possible.
I truly believe when we get to heaven, we will be surprised by what actually mattered the most. What actually changed the world. What actually fulfilled the purpose for which we were created. The things you feel are small – are big to God. Today it could be helping someone in the line at the grocery store; tomorrow it could be an encouraging phone conversation with a friend. Wherever it is, whatever it is, remember, it matters, and it can impact eternity!
You have a calling and a purpose until your very last breath. Ephesians 2:10: “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
We don’t know how our lives could impact eternity. How our stories could unfold, how our talents could be used and how God could redeem what feels purposeless in the everyday to bring hope to a world that desperately needs it. Every aspect has purpose, and every moment has potential impact … even when you cannot see it.
So today if you are hearing those “ordinary” tapes playing in your head, let God show you just how extraordinary your ordinary is. Ask him to show you who needs a dose of encouragement today, how can He use your journey to help another in need. I truly believe it is the small places we showed up and served in obedience that will actually be what prompts Jesus to say, “Well done. Remember when you took the time to share encouraging words with someone who needed them? That’s the day you helped change the world.” It is my prayer that today you truly see how extraordinary you really are in the eyes of our heavenly father. Your ordinary is extraordinary!
